I didn’t follow any video tutorial step-by-step to do this walk cycle because I like to understand things more than memorise things. I used the book The Animator’s Survival Kit (Richard Williams) as my reference, I read the whole chapter of walk cycle and understand it very well then I went to do the animation.

Interactive Lectures

Overview

One of students’ concerns while attending lectures is taking notes. This project basically is an interactive lectures where students take notes, search library and interact with objects in a new and innovative way.

This project aims to assist students in their studying lives and also to create interesting and innovative lectures.

Proposed Solution

There will be many multi-touch screens in The Cube. Each student need to stand in front of a single multi-touch screen where he/she sees a list of the available lectures.

Students can attend lectures by tapping on the name of desired lecture and then touching a smart card to gain access (Near Field Communication technology or NFC needed). Five windows will open in front of them after entering the lecture:

Window1: Video of the lecturer speaking

Window2: Transcript of the lecturer’s talk

Window3: Interactive 3D model related to the topic of the lecture.

Window4: Notebook

Window5: The University’s library

To be clear while I explain about how this all work, I am going to choose an engineering lecture.

In this interactive lecture students can see and hear the lecturer through a wireless headphone connected via Bluetooth technology (Window1)

Lets say that the lecturer explaining about how two pieces of gears work, a 3D model will appear in Window2 where student can see a live explaining and also examine the 3D model if they like to.

In Window2 students can read lecturer’s transcript where they have two options to interact with it. They can select important text from the transcript and drag it to the Notebook window (Window4) or they also can drag that text to the Library window (Window5) if they want to search about it. With this method students no longer need to waste time taking notes.

Lecture dismissed?

Using NFC technology simply touch your tablet or mobile phone to take your notes, search results and a recorded video of the lecture with you.

STRENGTHS

Attractive and fun way for students to attend lectures.

Students are more focused with lecturer instead spending some times to write and take notes.

Every student is able to examine 3D objects in the same time that lecturer explain about them.

WEAKNESSES

Students won’t be able take other notes that are not in lecturer’s transcript.

OPPORTUNITIES

Better understanding of lectures.

Flexibility in attendance for students (anytime without fixed lecture times)

THREATS

Students may get tired if attending long lectures.

Stage two!

This project can be developed further if The Cube team like it. This project can benefit the whole society if QUT opens The Cube’s doors to public where people can attend social lectures, but also any kind of lectures that QUT can offer to the society.

The idea of The Cube is great however, many concepts require people to stand in front of the screen for long time and that may disturb people. I really suggest to study this matter before applying any concept into The Cube.

The solution could simply be a “chair” or stool. This could be an innovative chair that suits the space.

Since I’m mostly interested in character animation my main inspirations come from the best 3D animation studios in the world such as DreamWorks, Blue Sky and Pixar.

I like Pixar’s cartoonish style so much and this is where I’m focusing in my practice.

One of the best short film created by Pixar is Geri’s Game 1997.

I like the idea of using one character to tell a story of two characters. And also in that time this kind of 3D animation render was amazing and I still have the same feeling when I watch that animation.

Blue Sky Studios produced one of my best 3D animation movie which is Ice Age. The characters are really loveable and funny.

There are other great production companies that I like their movie such as Universal Studios, they’ve produced one of my favorite movie ever. It’s Despicable Me!

I love this movie not only because its funny story, but also because of the innovative characters (the minions). I like how they speak where you only understand one word but you get what they mean.

Yes I’m that kind of animator who love cartoon and wish to produce more and more 3D cartoon animations. I think the main reason I love cartoon is it’s always comedy and always colorful.

During my education life I try to achieve the render quality of the above great studios.

I’ve met the director Laura Smith while Checkmate under production and we discussed one of the opening scenes which needs some animation.

The scene is showing the hero walking in a sad mood and we needed to add some chess pieces to look at him in a sad mood as well.

During the process of this very short animation work I’ve gone through some experimentations: I was experimenting how to rig a chess piece.

It was fun but took me around 3 days to rig the middle chess piece.

I’m currently working on an 11 seconds audio to produce a character animation. It’s actually a competition belongs to?www.11secondclub.com
